Welcome to episode 9!

Words, Words, Words
Talking and writing about visual art

The irony of an audio podcast from a visual artist: This week I talk about what it's like to talk about images - how and why we visual artists are expected to talk and write about our work. Plus I then follow Alyson Stanfield's instructions from the first in her series about writing to promote an event, in my case my upcoming Open Studios.

Mentioned on this week's show:

Greenwich Open Studios
14-15 and 21-22 June, 12-6pm
See the website for addresses and maps to all the venues, including me! This was also my first podcast done with The Levelator, hope it made a difference for you.

Filling the Creative Well

Recorded the day after Chelsea Art Fair finished, this is a rather rambling 13 minutes of a rather tired me. But it was still fun, and I talked about what I was trying doing that do that very day - how I refill my creative and energy well.

Welcome to episode 3! All about Art Fairs.
Prelude 2

Today I give advice to other artists about art fairs! This is something I'm asked about a lot, since I've done a lot of artist fairs, so hopefully there's some tips here that'll help!

A wee apology in advance: I lost a lot of editing time yesterday when Audacity crashed. In addition I decided to play with splicing together my audio with snippets of an art fair meeting yesterday at Skylark Gallery. (Thanks to the artists at Skylark who were happy to be recorded!) Some of the jumps aren't great, I need to find some good segway music or sounds. A few blips and bits where I'm trying to edit out my "and"s and "umm"s, and I'm still getting to grips with adjusting the levels and peak amplitudes and stuff, especially trying to match recordings from different places.

Welcome to episode 2!

This week I have artist and friend Jo Ashby over for coffee and croissants while she has a look at my Blurb books. We talk about the books, about my paintings and photographs, and bits of other stuff. It winds down with sounds from Greenwich, recorded specially for listener Sue in France.
At one point Jo talks about the flecks of white of waves so it's worth having a look at her sea paintings so you can see what she means by the difference in our work. (Jo also paints seascapes.)

Mentioned on the show:
Jo Ashby, painter
www.tina-m-books.com : My books
Blurb book creation
Skylark Gallery
Greenwich Market
Sue Lishman, artist

Sometimes it's easy to forget that technology you're used to, other people find alien! A few people just couldn't find out how to listen. Firstly, remember that a podcast is just an MP3 file. It's just a music or audio file that plays in your internet browser. Nothing fancy or strange. :) So here are some points and tips for people new to listening to podcasts:
  • On the StudioWaves.libsyn.com page you can click on the little grey "pod" button to listen to the podcast. This will open a page with the MP3 file in it, which will load and then play.
  • On my Blogger page you can click on the little blue "podcast" button and the same thing will happen - this will open a page with the MP3 file in it, which will load and then play.
  • Alternatively, on either site, you can download the file by right-clicking (or alt-clicking) and choosing "Save File as" or "Save Link as". Then you can save the MP3 file directly to your computer and play it in whatever sound or music programme you prefer. You can also download the file directly for putting it onto your MP3 player (such as an iPod)
  • You can also subscribe to the podcast! Click on the little orange and grey "RSS" button in the StudioWaves.libsyn.com page. Clicking this brings up a new page where at the top you have options for how you want to subscribe. If none of these makes sense to you, don't worry about it - and see below for what I'm going to improve.
What am I going to do? After all, this podcast is my responsibility and I want to make it as easy as possible for you! I ask that you bear with me a little bit because some of this podcasting promotional stuff is new to me too.
  • Firstly each post from now on, on BOTH sites, is going to include an easy obvious "listen" button.
  • Second, I'm going to try and make subscriptions easier. I will figure out how to include an email subscription option and an iTunes option.
  • Thirdly, I promise that the podcasts will ALWAYS be posted in my Blogger blog too. So if you already subscribe to my regular blog then you will see the updates anyway. You don't ever need to worry about the StudioWaves.libsyn.com webpage!
  • And finally, I'm going to try and figure out how to embed the audio in the blog post itself. I've seen podcasts that just have a little player included right in the post, so I'll try to figure that out!
Thanks for reading. And listening! In case you missed it, the very first podcast is here Listen Now.
